Dermaplaning Explained
Dermaplaning is a highly effective, non-invasive aesthetic procedure used to exfoliate the skin and remove unwanted fine facial hair. It is a mechanical exfoliation method that involves carefully and meticulously skimming the skin’s surface.
How the Procedure Works
During the treatment, a trained professional uses a sterile surgical-grade scalpel (or a special dermaplaning tool) held at a precise 45-degree angle. The blade is gently glided across the face, physically removing the outermost layer of dead skin cells and the fine, soft facial hair, often called “peach fuzz” (vellus hair).
The procedure is quick, typically lasting around 30 to 60 minutes, and requires no downtime afterward.
Key Benefits of Dermaplaning
Dermaplaning immediately reveals a fresher, smoother complexion and offers several lasting benefits:
-
Instant Radiance and Smoothness: By removing dull, dead skin and vellus hair, the skin surface is instantly polished, resulting in a brighter, more luminous glow.
-
Enhanced Product Absorption: The removal of the surface barrier allows topical skincare products (like serums, moisturizers, and active ingredients) to penetrate much deeper and work more effectively.
-
Flawless Makeup Application: With a completely smooth and hair-free canvas, makeup glides on effortlessly and sits more smoothly on the skin, preventing a “caked” appearance.
-
Stimulates Cell Turnover: The process encourages the body’s natural cell regeneration, which can help improve the appearance of acne scars, fine lines, and hyperpigmentation over time.
-
Safe for Most Skin Types: Since it is a purely mechanical process, it is often a suitable exfoliation method for people who cannot tolerate chemical exfoliants like certain acid peels.
It is important to note that, contrary to a common myth, the fine hair removed during dermaplaning will not grow back thicker or darker. It simply grows back as the same vellus hair it was before the treatment.
